Strolling Along the Caldera Trail
One of the things not to be missed when in Santorini, is the picturesque hike around the rim of the caldera from Fira to Oia, that will unfold some of the most breathtaking prospects of the island. The whitewashed houses, the blue-domed churches, the embroidered coastline, the caldera, and the volcano, are awe-inspiring from all those different viewpoints along the path.  Walking the calderimi and exploring the charming villages of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia will be a gratifying experience.
row 2
The path starts at Theotokopoulos square in Fira, right behind the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral. Follow the signs to the cable car, and from there, you will begin to see the signs for the walking trail. The path is well marked and suitable for anyone of average physical condition. The walk is about 10 km/6 miles, lasting 3 to 4 hours. If you plan to do this during the summer months, you should start early in the morning or in the afternoon, when the sun is not that hot. We suggest that you combine this experience with a morning visit to Fira, and when you have enjoyed your hearty breakfast, set off to your hiking adventure full of energy. This way, as you approach Oia in the evening, you get to admire the legendary sunset as well!
row 3
Following the cobblestone path, the trail leads to the first village you will encounter, the beautiful Firostefani. Continuing onward, the trail passes by Agios Nikolaos Monastery, ultimately leading to the picturesque Imerovigli. Take your time, by all means, to pause and gaze at the surroundings. Take detours to visit the churches and explore the villages to get to know the authentic Santorini.
Halfway between Imerovigli and Oia, you will get to the highest point of the route, at Agios Markos and Mikros Porfitis Elias churches, but from there, you will start to walk downhill to Mavro Vouno where you will enjoy a stunning view! As you continue walking, you will reach Profitis Elias church of Oia, and if you like, you can take a turn to visit Foinika village. Lastly, Oia and Atrina Canava 1894 await you at the end of your stroll, to put your feet up and relax marveling at one of the most magical sunsets you will ever behold!
